FAIRNESS AS AN ANGER ACTIVATOR

In the 2nd Edition of my book, Peace:The Other Side of Anger, many causes or activators of this emotion will be described. Fairness, is one such source.

For teens, “This isn’t fair” is a statement often made about many sources. These are just a few:

1. School assignments,

2. Household rules,( curfews, chores)

3. Their treatment in different settings,

4. When teens are referred to as part of a group described
as, “those people”, or

5. When someone acts like their “all that” being better
than a particular adolescent etc.

Sometimes this description of a situation is verbalized, in other cases, it is not as apparent, and often underlies a reaction which seems unconnected to a particular situation. The source of this disguised feeling needs to be uncovered, This is one of the many causes of anger which may not be obvious.

The reasons, the why’s of adolescent anger, are explored in Peace:The Other Side of Anger, a book designed to be a resource for adults who seek to assist youngsters in managing this emotion in positive ways.

Viewing this subject more globally in our society, the idea of fair or equal treatment for different groups is quite noticeable. In a recent Netflix series, “Seven Seconds,” this disparity is evident in the unequal treatment given to police officers as compared to that given to the members of the community in which they work. The idea of justice, or lack of it, can become a source of protests, often leading to violent behavior. This has been particularly evident in recent years in our society. Something I am certain you are well aware.

Fairness vs Unfairness or Equality vs Inequality in treatment is a problem we face in our society in so many kinds of relationships. Understanding their source, and working toward creating a more level playing field, are necessary goals toward creating a more peaceful society.
