The way to help maintain peace is for all of us to see how different issues effect us personally, rather than looking at issues which create a “them vs us posture.” These concerns are individually based, not by society or party driven, and as such don’t take on a heightened emotional life. The question is, “What’s good for me?” It is becoming an independent, not a group thinker, guided by our own values and needs, not what others want us to believe.
