MOVING AHEAD WITH VIOLENCE PREVENTION EFFORTS

I am focused on helping to prevent violence in our society, particularly with teens. During my time as a high school guidance counselor at Herbert H. Lehman High School, Bronx, N.Y., I provided students with peer mediation training. During this time, they not only facilitated mediations with their peers, but also helped develop an anger management program known as, The Anger Management Power (A.M.P.) Program. In addition, we developed workshops for an annual event known as Violence Awareness Prevention Day (V.A.P.D.).

After retiring, I authored a book based on the Anger Management Power (A.M.P.) Program entitled, Peace:The Other Side of Anger. It was written for adults to assist youngsters in handling anger in positive ways. It describes the Why’s (causes — obvious/less apparent), the How’s (different effects of anger — physical, emotional and psychological) and the What’s (methods of assisting adolescents in de-escalating and expressing this emotion). Currently, I am revising a 2nd Edition of Peace: The Other Side of Anger to include chapters and information on gun violence and social media as well as the pandemic — something non-existent at that time.

In addition, I developed and have facilitated Violence Prevention Seminars for Teacher Education students in various colleges and universities, as well as for parents, professionals and youngsters within various settings.
