Peace: The Other Side of Loss

There are many sources of loss – relationships, jobs, health, death. The greater the loss the more intense the feeling. In other words, “How important was this in our lives?” The answer to this question describes the depth of this deficit in our life. It is difficult to understand. Many times we ask, “Why did this happen?” Often, we know the reason — one we can choose to accept or not. One thing for sure — it is a reality! After going through this process of understanding the “What,” “How,” and “Why,” comes the most difficult part — our reaction to what has occurred.

If you have endured any of these losses, think about

  • What feeling(s) did you have?
  • What actions did you take?
  • What was the result of these actions?

The questions loss raises, its results, and how we choose to manage it, is an individual process. It is one which takes time and thought to enable people to move on with their lives, if they choose. Loss teaches us lessons to be learned, and can allow us to understand and decide whether or not what happened offered the best result for the situation and/or people involved and how it impacts our future.
